The Decline in U.S. Economic Dynamism and its Impact on Communities
Despite the rhetoric around technological disruption and rapid transformation, the U.S. economy is suffering from too little change today, not too much. Americans are less likely to start a business, move to another region, or switch jobs now than at any other time in memory. Fading dynamism denies millions of Americans the prospect of upward mobility and results in an economy that leaves far too many people and places behind. This session will explain the downward trend in dynamism, why it matters, and how public policies can chart a course back to an economy that delivers on its promise of access to opportunity for all.
John Lettieri, Co-Founder & President, Economic Innovation Group
9:30 - 10:45a.m.
Moving beyond Job Creation: A Conversation on Quality Jobs & Workforce Development
CDVC funds seek not just to create jobs but to create quality jobs that are accessible to low-income people. Maureen Conway of the Aspen Institute will set the stage by describing Aspen’s extensive work in the field of job quality. Then we will hear from practitioners about how they identify companies that offer high quality employment opportunities, work with companies post-investment to increase job quality, and then measure the quality of the jobs they have help create.
- Keith Bisson, President, Coastal Enterprises, Inc.
- Maureen Conway, Executive Director, Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program
- Grady Vanderhoofven, President & CEO, Three Roots Capital
10:45 - 11:00a.m.
